[Gugak in 2] 김소라 (KIM SO RA) – 흥 (JOY)

Artist:
Kim Sora is a percussion soloist as well as a producer. Having sought to globalize Korea’s jangdan through deconstructing traditional rhythms and collaborating with diverse artistic genres, Kim has established herself as an artist equipped with sensational rhythms, delicate and rich performance and artistry. Having made a successful debut in the European and North American music scenes by being named the official showcase artist for both WOMEX and Mundial Montreal in 2018, Kim keeps expressing Korea’s musical senses by experimenting with every kind of sound and rhythm. “A Sign of Rain”, her first album, got nominated for Best Jazz & Crossover Album for Korean Music Awards 2019, which was public recognition of her efforts to expand the realm of Korean percussion music. One of the most vigorous percussion players in and outside of Korea, Kim Sora crosses diverse artistic boundaries as a doctor of Performing Arts.

Work:
“Joy”
Lee Gyubo, a 13th-century Korean scholar, said, “Whenever I encounter the world in a state of joy, I recite poems.” Jeong Geuk-in, a bureaucrat who lived in the 1400s, wrote in his poem Sangchun-gok, “The outer world is one with myself and the same is true for heung (meaning joy).” He defines “heung” as the joy that originates from the inner self becoming one with the outer world. I take “heung” as the joy of telling stories about what inspires me.
