[Gugak in] 달음(Dal:um) – 탈(TAL)

Artist:
Dal:um is a duo band established in 2018 by Ha Su-yeon (gayageum) and Hwang Hye-yeong (geomungo). The name Dal:um signifies the way people keep trying their best at something that they have successfully started, reflecting the musicians’ strong will.
Despite their apparent similarity, the gayageum and geomungo are surprisingly different from each other in structure, playing techniques and tone color. Dal:um will show how innovative interpretations create a harmony of strong energy and beautiful voices of the two instruments.

Work:
TAL / composed by Choi Jiun & Dal:um, arranged by Dal:um
This piece has been inspired by Leper Dance, 1st stage of Goseong Five-clown Plays. The word “tal” has complex connotations coming from its uses with various senses such as a form of dance, illness and freedom from pain.
TAL has three sections: the world becoming ill, freedom from pain and transcendence. The work expresses how an ill world strives to overcome its problems, eventually transcending into a shining light. The body motions and taryeong jangdans of Korean traditional mask dances were incorporated to describe the oscillations of the world.
Composer Choi Jiun and Dal:um worked together on the first draft of TAL for the 12-stringed gayageum and geomungo, which has later been arranged by Dal:um for 25-stringed instruments.
