The Impact of Korean Wave in the Philippines
The Korean Cultural Center, together with the Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange (KOFICE) will be hosting “Hallyu sa Pinas,” a one-day forum on the impact of Hallyu in the Philippines, given the strong interest of the Filipino consumers on Korean dramas, films and music.
Hallyu was derived from the two Korean words ‘Han’ for Korean and ‘Ryu’ for Wave, bringing about the present-day name for Korean Wave.
The forum will be bringing in media practitioners, members of the academe, film and music producers as well as other enthusiasts to look into the past, present and future of Hallyu (Korean Wave) in the Philippines. This forum will be examining the extent of the influence of Hallyu in the country as well as the acculturation that happens between the Korean and Filipino cultures through this phenomenon.
Korean Director In Ho Hwang of the movie ‘Spellbound’ will be joining the Filipino and Korean speakers for the forum. He will be tackling the Contemporary Korean Film Environment as his film ‘Spellbound’ will be the premiere movie for the Baguio leg of the upcoming Korean Film Festival on September 26. The Korean Film Festival will run from September 18 to October 7 at SM Megamall, SM Baguio and SM City Cebu.
A Korean film producer, Mr. Sanghoon Ahn from the Sangsang Film Company, will be exploring the current trends in Korean film production. For the film panel of the forum, joining the Korean representatives are local film directors Pepe Diokno, Eduardo Lejano, Jr., Cris Martinez and Tikoy Aguiluz to further discuss the future of Korean movies in local cinema.
Also included in the list of topics to be discussed are Hallyu and the Philippine society, Koreanovelas behind the screen and K-Pop and the Filipino Craze.
The forum will be held on September 14 at the Hotel Intercontinental.
